The city of Clemson approved a $4.65 million bond to fund a skate park, splash pad, pickleball courts and other recreation projects at its Sept. 25 city council meeting.
The project includes a major renovation to Clemson Park, including a skate park, splash pad, pickleball court and new parking for Nettles Park, along with a new segment of Green Crescent Trail along 18 Mile Creek.
The Clemson Park renovations will include a skate park next to the existing pump track, as well as a major revitalization of the pavilion. These renovations will include a combination splash pad and plaza with an event stage and revitalized picnic kitchen and bathroom facilities.
The Nettles Park improvements include 56 paved parking spaces and eight dedicated pickleball courts, which will be built between the upper baseball fields and Central Road.
The bond also funds approximately 2.75 miles of Green Crescent Trail along 18 Mile Creek, connecting the Grange to Patrick Square and Nettles Park.
This project comes after a months-long campaign by Skate Upstate for a skate park and increasing tensions between tennis players and pickleball players for court space at Nettles, issues that students have been involved in recently.
The bond will be paid for with revenue from hospitality fees and hospitality tax funds, which come from hotel room taxes and fees.
The city has also restricted over $2.1 million outright to pay for the projects in addition to the bond.
