TigerLive held Clemson University’s ninth annual drag show in Old Main Auditorium on Saturday night, hosted by Carolina-native Patti O’Furniture.
The show featured drag queens Taejah Thomas, Erica Chanel and headliner, Monét X Change. Change was titled Miss Congeniality on season 10 of “Ru Paul’s Drag Race” and the first Queen of Color to be inducted into the Hall of Fame after winning season 4 of “Ru Paul’s Drag Race: All Stars”.
The event ran from 9 to 11 p.m., as the audience watched several performances with intermittent commentary from both Thomas and Chanel.
Audience members interacted with and tipped the queens throughout, as is customary for drag shows.
Chanel left after her second routine to perform another show of the night, but not without leaving the audience with a statement for fellow members of the LGBTQ community to embrace and love themselves.
After the performances, TigerLive staff and O’Furniture announced the new name for the club’s mascot, a white tiger stuffed animal, that had been voted for on their Instagram over the preceding week. Clemmy was the chosen name.
Change took the stage to close the show. She entertained Chris Miller, vice president of student affairs, but later explained that she was unaware of Miller’s position in the University administration.
“I attend many student events throughout the year at the invitation of our student organizations. These events span the political, religious, and social spectrum,” said Miller in a statement to The Tiger. “I strive to support all students in their wide variety of co-curricular and extracurricular endeavors.”
After her performance, Change delivered a stand-up style story of her life as a drag queen followed by a video showcasing her growth and subsequent acceptance onto “Ru Paul’s Drag Race.” She then performed a rendition of her first-ever drag number.
O’Furniture, Change and Thomas ended the show together on stage thanking the audience for their support and reminding members of the LGBTQ community that they are loved and appreciated. Both O’Furniture and Thomas stayed in the Old Main lobby afterward to take photos with audience members.
