The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), founded in 1909, has worked to combat the injustices and inequalities faced by the African-American community across the country, and for the first time since 2015, Clemson welcomes its own renewed NAACP chapter to campus.
On January 25, Clemson approved the Association’s reestablishment. Chairman and junior political science major, Alexander Brown and vice chairman Waliya Henry, a junior biological science major, currently helm the chapter and are waiting for full reestablishment approval from the NAACP state president.
Junior marketing major, Travion Craig-Garrison, the chairman of the NAACP Campus Relations Commitee, spoke to us more in depth about the goals and desires for the chapter.
Griffin Cobb: What are your goals as a chapter? Any immediate future plans?
Travion Craig-Garrison: Our immediate future plans right now is to get our foundation set in place. We won’t be doing any big events this semester, but next semester, we plan to go rockin’. One of the things we want to do is be the glue, basically, for all the minority groups on campus.

Of course we’ll have pageants and stuff, but we’ll have social gatherings to solve issues in the Clemson community, either systematic discrimination, raising awareness. Historically the NAACP has been for African Americans, but we stand with all minorities, so we plan to work with a lot of other clubs around campus like Women for Tomorrow and the Latina clubs around campus, as well as the LGBTQ+ Community.
