Clemson baseball ties Wright State 1-1 in series with 6-2 victory

DOUG KINGSMORE STADIUM, CLEMSON, SC – A three-run homerun from Seth Beer propelled the Tigers over the Wright State Raiders on Saturday night, Feb. 18.
Clemson, who lost game one in the series on Friday, bounced back to win 6-2 thanks in large part to the strong outing of senior left-handed pitcher Pat Krall. Krall threw 6.0 innings, giving up only two hits and one run, which was unearned. He also struck out three batters while walking three.
“I think it’s the best I’ve seen [Krall] throw all year,” Head Coach Monte Lee said.
After Krall exited the game, the solid pitching continued with sophomores Brooks Crawford and Ryley Gilliam. They combined for 3.0 innings pitched, two hits, one unearned run, and five strikeouts.
“I thought Pat Krall was phenomenal today,” said Lee after the game. “I thought Brooks Crawford came in and threw the ball really, really well … and it was great to see Ryley Gilliam throw so well out of the bullpen.”
Offensively, Beer led the way with his homerun, the first of the season for him. He ended the day 1-for-3 with three RBIs and two walks.
“I think I kind of learned from that strikeout yesterday … I went up there a little more relaxed and confident,” Beer said of his homerun.
Logan Davidson added another RBI to his resume, giving him three on the season through the first two games. His RBI single helped the Tigers extend their lead late in the game.
Lee said Davidson has played well so far this season.
“One word that stands out about Logan is, a lot like Seth as a true freshman, is poise,” Lee said. “You can see the same type of traits in Logan this year as you did Seth last year.”
Grayson Byrd also added another run to the board in the eighth with an RBI fielder’s choice.
“You know that’s huge, having a four-run lead heading into the ninth,” Lee said. “Someone’s got to load them up to bring the tying run up there.”
The Tigers did commit two errors on the night which led to the two runs the Raiders scored.
The rubber match between Clemson and Wright State is Sunday, Feb. 19 at 1 p.m.
