In a game where the teams were hardly ever more than five points away from each other on the scoreboard, the Virginia Tech (VT) Hokies managed to bully their way to the top in a tough 82-81 victory against the Tigers. While the Tigers were favored 73 percent to VT’s 27 percent according to ESPN’s basketball power index (BPI), VT’s Seth Allen lead the Hokies to the win in the second half, scoring 15 of his 17 points in the last 20 minutes of the game.
Tonight’s loss marked the sixth straight Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) loss for the Tigers — three of them being on their home-turf in the recently reopened Littlejohn Coliseum, and four of them having been lost by a margin of five points or less. They now stand at 11-8, 15th in the ACC, to VT’s 15-4, 6th in the ACC.
While Seth Allen lead VT’s offense with 17 points, Tigers Jaron Blossomgame and Avry Holmes had 20 points each, Holmes being the last to score in the game bringing the team within a point of an overtime-forcing tie.
The Tigers will be preparing for their next game at the University of Pittsburgh next Saturday, Jan. 28 at 12 p.m.
