Welcome to the Sports Notebook! Each week, The Tiger will give you a look at what’s going on in Clemson Athletics with a summary of what happened during the previous week and what’s ahead for the new week. NOTE: Any of the prior weekend’s results in any sport will not be reflected in this article.
FOOTBALL
What has happened: Last week, Clemson started the first of fifteen spring practices on a rainy and cold Wednesday inside the Poe Indoor Practice Facility. The Tigers return 17 starters as they seek their fourth straight ACC Championship and CFB Playoff appearance. The intriguing battle of the spring for Clemson fans will be to see if rising senior quarterback Kelly Bryant will be able to hold off freshman Trevor Lawrence and sophomore Hunter Johnson.
Coming up: Clemson will practice three times this week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The Orange and White Spring Game is on Saturday, April 14 at 2:30 p.m. inside Death Valley.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
What has happened: Brad Brownell’s Tigers defeated Florida State 76-63 on Wednesday in Littlejohn Coliseum to secure their 11th win in ACC play, a program record. The Tigers also won their 15th home game of the year, which ties a program record. Clemson went up to Syracuse to play the Orange this past Saturday. Clemson was ranked 18th in the AP poll last week.
Coming up: With wins over Georgia Tech and FSU, Clemson should secure a double-bye in the upcoming ACC Tournament in Brooklyn, NY beginning on Tuesday.
BASEBALL
What has happened: It was another weekend, and another sweep for Clemson, this time over Dallas Baptist which included a doubleheader on Saturday due to weather. The Tigers also picked up a mid-week comeback 9-8 win over Winthrop in 10 innings. This past weekend, the Tigers took on the South Carolina Gamecocks.
Coming up: The Wofford Terriers will make the short drive from Spartanburg to face Clemson,on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. On Wednesday, the Tigers will head up to Greenville to play Michigan State at 7 p.m. They will then host a weekend series against Georgia Tech beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
TRACK AND FIELD
What has happened: Seven track and field participants received spots in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, the NCAA announced Tuesday. Cordell Lamb, Jeffery Green, John Lewis and Jeremiah Green will represent the men, while Kamryn McIntosh, Fellan Ferguson and Grace Barnett will represent the women.
Coming up: Clemson will head to College Station, TX for the NCAA Indoor Championships, which start on Friday and run through Saturday.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
What has happened: Clemson received a No. 15 seed in the ACC Tournament and lost to 10th seed Georgia Tech 61-55 this past Wednesday in the first round.
Coming up: The loss ends the 2017-18 season for Audra Smith and the Tiger women. They wrap up the season 11-19 overall and 1-15 in ACC play.
VOLLEYBALL
What has happened: First-year head coach Michaela Franklin and Clemson volleyball wrapped up the fall schedule with a record of 7-25 and 2-18 in ACC play. The wins came in the Big Orange Bash against Bethune-Cookman, Jacksonville and Lamar, in the Yale Invitational against Delaware and in the Clemson Challenge against Georgia Southern and they also beat Boston College and Wake Forest.
Coming up: Clemson will begin the spring schedule on Saturday, March 31 against Georgia Tech in Atlanta as part of the Georgia Tech tournament. The Tigers will host two matches in Jervey Gym against Georgia Tech on April 5 at 6 p.m. and Georgia State on April 13 at 5 p.m. before wrapping things up on April 21 at South Carolina in another tournament.
