In the first game of ACC play, the Clemson Tigers defeated Georgia Tech 3-2. The Tigers relied on the long ball to get the offense going, and rode Jacob Hennessy for 7.0 innings of well-pitched baseball.
The Tigers struck first when Seth Beer sent one well over the Cajun Cafe in the first inning. It was Beer’s fourth homerun of the season.
Bryce Teodosio, who was batting .167 coming into the game, hit one to left-center in the third inning. It was his second long ball of the year, and put the Tigers on top 2-0.
Georgia Tech pulled a run back in the fourth when Clemson starter Hennessy gave up back-to-back hits to start the inning. Kel Johnson hit a RBI groundout to third base to score Chase Murray and cut the Clemson lead to 2-1.
Hennessy started the eighth inning on the mound, but after giving up a single to the nine-hole hitter, he was pulled in favor of Ryan Miller. The runner came around to score on a RBI single from Murray.
Hennessy’s final line was 7.0 innings with two runs on six hits. He also struck out seven while not walking any.
With the game tied up a 2-2, Clemson led off the eighth with a Logan Davidson single. He came around to score on a RBI single from Patrick Cromwell, who is third on the team with 10 RBIs. That gave the Tigers a 3-2 lead.
Miller was able to close out the game for Clemson after giving up a leadoff single, but retiring the next three batters he faced.
Due to forecasts of inclement weather, the series will conclude with a doubleheader starting at noon Saturday. Game two will start approximately 50 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
