As we enter into the final (and most stressful) weeks of the semester, Christmas break can seem like eons away. If you’re like me, sometimes it may feel like the journey to Christmas break is so treacherous that you may not even make it there. That’s why I’ve created an end of semester survival guide to ensure that you power through these next couple of weeks like the strong, healthy, motivated warrior you are.
1. Eat well
We’ve all heard it—eat your fruits and vegetables, eat breakfast, etc., etc. While this is important, I’m going to talk about the other side of things. Don’t be afraid to treat yourself once in a while. In other words, don’t make the week before finals the time to buckle down to a full-fledge keto diet or another means of strict, limited eating. While diets of this sort can have benefits, maintaining balance is a key component of a healthy lifestyle. There is no reason to make a drastic change to your diet and endure hunger, headaches and other side effects during an already stressful time.
2. Exercise
Again, I know we’ve all heard this. We all know exercise is good for us and I’m sure most of us know it can be a good stress reliever. However, what I really want to remind you of is the importance of doing a workout you enjoy. Exercising should be something you look forward to, and there are so many ways to stay active that I guarantee there is something for everyone. Shameless plug: check out group fitness classes at Fike and the Douthit Hills gym for a variety of classes to switch up your exercise routine. (It’s not like I teach there or anything *cough* *cough*)
3. Sleep
By now you might be thinking, “Okay, Captain Obvious. Thanks for reiterating what I see on virtually every poster on campus around finals.” I promise this is the last common tip. Obviously we know it’s important to get enough sleep, and this can seem virtually impossible with end-of-semester due dates and deadlines. However, please do yourself a favor and try to allocate time for rest. If you’re in the library until 4 a.m. (happens to the best of us), set aside some time for a nap the next day. Your health (physical and mental) will thank you!
4. Boost your immune system
All of the previous tips help with your health, but there are even more things that you can do to stay healthy during the end of the semester. Implement a daily multivitamin, drink EmergenC daily or take a daily dose of Elderberry extract (my personal favorite). All of these things help with immune defense and will reduce your chances of getting bogged down by sickness at one of the most inconvenient times of the semester.
5. Have fun
It can be easy to let stress get the best of you, but remember to dedicate time to having fun and relaxing. After a few days of high stress, grab dinner with a friend or watch a movie. As always, balance is key. We’re only here for four years (give or take a few for some, but who’s counting?); Make the most of it.
