Deadpool, the eighth installment in the X-Men film series, has shattered numerous box office records since it hit theaters two days ago, including the largest R-rated film opening in North America, the biggest opening for Fox, the biggest opening in the month of February, and the highest grossing President’s Day weekend (estimates place it at around $150 million over the four days, which would dwarf the previous record-holder Fifty Shades of Grey which “only” grossed $93 million). Besides the film’s fantastic reviews, it proved that R-rated superhero films can both be done well and still be quite lucrative. While it’s highly unlikely that DC Comics’ Suicide Squad will be geared towards an R rating, Warner Bros. may rethink its handling of its superhero-led movies in the future (as of right now its goal is to keep everything PG-13).
