Netflix Binge Pick or Pass: “3rd Rock from the Sun”

“3rd Rock from the Sun”
Summary: Four aliens, presumably all similar in age on their own planet, show up on earth for some unknown research experiment. One is an older man, one a tween, one an older teenager and one a young woman. All four are identified as male on their own planet. The show was made a while ago, obvious not only from the grainy quality and outdated clothing, but also from the sexist jokes and innuendos. They’re somewhat funny, as funny as a pilot episode’s jokes can be funny, but they’re still weirdly unsettling. Even the tweeny-bopper, played by Joseph Gordon Levitt, continuously comments about girls, sex and dirty thoughts. All in all, it looks funny and I did laugh out loud once or twice, but I cringed more than once as well.
Predictions: The aliens are going to stay on earth longer than their expected mission. I mean they kind of have to, there are six seasons. They’re going to undergo the trials and tribulations of being human such as relationships, work and school, and fashion. It’ll be mostly funny and rarely sad, but it’ll absolutely all be accompanied by terrible clothing and music only found in the 90s.
Cast: John Lithgow, Kristen Johnston, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and French Stewart
Duration: 22 minutes
Pros:

  • It’s short and easy to watch as background, so it’s great for a busy college lifestyle
  • It looks like it will be easy to tune in and out of, so no need to binge watch seasons one and two in one weekend (although it’s definitely possible)
  • The characters all appear in bigger blockbuster debuts later in their careers, so it’s fun to see them in their beginning
  • It’s fun to indulge the idea that life exists on other planets. This show gives us an idea of what it might be like and how it would exist in an earth setting.

Final review: Give it a try. I mean, why not? It seems funny and at least can give you a laugh every now and then.
