Clemson University Police Department and Clemson University Fire & EMS Department officers responded to the accident.

A Clemson student passed away in a motor vehicle crash early Saturday morning after being airlifted to Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital.

The student was later pronounced dead on Sunday, according to Andrew Wilson, the chief deputy coroner of the Pickens County Coroner’s Office.

At approximately 12:35 a.m., the car, driven by the student, “went off the roadway and overturned,” and the student was ejected from the vehicle, according to Wilson.

The student was treated on-scene by Pickens County Emergency Medical Services and Clemson University Fire & Emergency Medical Services. The student was then transported in a helicopter to the Prisma Health hospital in Greenville.

The student was identified as Caroline Deer, a junior genetics major.

The other passenger in the vehicle has been released from the hospital following treatment for minor injuries.

The Pickens County Coroner’s Office and the Clemson City Police Department are investigating the cause of the crash and the manner of the death. An autopsy has been scheduled for a later date.
