The Clemson men’s soccer team has been ordered by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) to forfeit its 2021 National Championship trophy.
The decision from the NCAA came this past week after news broke that one Clemson player tested positive for COVID-19 the day of the championship game. The team failed to notify anyone and allowed the player to take the field.
“The decision of the Clemson men’s soccer team to allow a player that tested positive for COVID-19 to play is a direct violation of the standards we hold at the NCAA,” said one NCAA official in a statement to the public.
“We honor the principles of integrity and trustworthiness, and as a result of this incident, the Clemson men’s soccer team will be stripped of its 2021 national championship trophy.”

The decision by the NCAA was heartbreaking and very shocking to the team.
“I can’t believe they feel the need to take what we earned away from us,” one player said. “We get that he shouldn’t have played in the game if he had COVID, but it had nothing to do with us winning the championship. Why are they taking the trophy from us then?”
Clemson fans were also devastated to hear the NCAA’s decision, as it was the team’s first national championship since 1987.
“The NCAA ought to be ashamed of themselves,” a resident of the Clemson area said. “Those boys won that trophy fair and square, and now they want it back to prove a point. It is sickening.”
A representative from the NCAA will arrive in Clemson in the coming weeks to collect the championship trophy from the team.
