After head coach Dabo Swinney compared freshman quarterback Cade Klubnik to a German Shepherd in a press release in early March, Clemson Athletics has moved forward with adding a dog show to the spring football game on March 9.
“I mean, he’s like a German Shepard,” Swinney said of Klubnik on March 9. “He’s ready to go all the time.”
When the Athletic department caught wind of this, the planning committee created the new component for the spring game.
The current players’ dogs will have priority on the field, with each taking the position of their owner. Currently, the football trainers are working on getting each of the pets to campus, to prep them for the event.
Klubnik is said to have recently adopted a German Shepherd to compete in the show. He and his canine companion will compete in the quarterback-owned dog category, with his biggest competitor to be DJ Uiagelelei and Uiagelelei’s English bulldog.

“My bet is on Klubnik and his dog Clemmy,” said a Clemson football player in a statement to The Kitten.
With Klubnik being praised by Clemson’s coaching staff, tension is certain to be felt in Saturday’s game. Klubnik and Uigagelei will not only have their pets compete for top dog, but will also compare their skills as quarterbacks on the field.
Dog show categories will also include running back, wide receiver, tight end and left tackle.
The highest scoring dog in each position category will then declare their owner as the starting player in said position for the fall.
Athletics anticipate high appraise for the dog show, especially after two owners and their dogs performed tricks at halftime of a men’s basketball game this past semester. May the best dog — and Tiger — win.
