Returning to the stage for the first time this semester, the Clemson Players are to perform “The Moors” this week through Oct. 9. As the first show of the semester, the Players have taken time and care to set expectations high for the season to come.
Set in the bleak English wetlands, the show is a dark comedy featuring two sisters and their dog who host a governess and moor-hen at their estate. Together, alongside their similar-looking maids, they discuss the ideas of love, power and the dangerous means to achieve them.
Written by Jen Silverman and directed by Kerrie Seymour, the play tosses dark and complex themes through witty banter to create an interesting tension throughout. Each character houses some deep desire they slowly explore, finding conflict as their desires overlap and get in each other’s ways. The growing chaos and various revelations of secrets keep the audience near the edge of their seat, only to laugh back into them as the comedy breaks through.
Audiences can look forward to seeing this show on a beautifully crafted set. The lights, atmosphere and individual props bring the audience fully into the eerie world of “The Moors.”
In producing the show, the talents of the technical crew, directors and actors have worked in tandem to create seamless intricacies. During design sessions for the set and lights, actors are busy practicing stage combat. As the worlds begin to merge together, the directorial team tweaks each aspect to make the transition smooth and audience-ready. Their effort and well-managed workflow pay off in their final tech rehearsals, dress rehearsals and inevitable live performances.
Tickets start at $10.00 for students and children, $13.50 for Clemson faculty/staff and $15.00 for the general public. The first of seven performances, the Clemson Players invite all to join them this week.
