Maggie Rogers – TBA
Maggie Rogers released her first full-length LP “Heard It in a Past Life” in 2019 following her breakthrough 2017 EP, “Now That the Light is Fading.” Rogers first rose to fame when a video of Pharrell Williams listening to her song “Alaska” went viral in 2016. While Rogers has not announced many details about her new music, she has been teasing fans on her social media accounts, tweeting, “making the record i’ll tour for a lifetime” on Oct. 18, 2021. Rogers’ forthcoming release occurs on the heels of her first full-length debut in 2019, and the 2020 LP “Notes from the Archive: Recordings 2011-2016,” which consists of songs recorded before Rogers signed to a label. Rogers’ EP “Now That the Light is Fading” is a wonderful, ambient collection of indie pop while her LP has a more developed pop sound. In 2019, Rogers released the standalone single “Love You for a Long Time,” which reflected more of her less produced tracks from her EP. Exact details about Rogers’ upcoming music are yet to be released.
Big Thief – “Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You”
Big Thief’s fifth album, “Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You,” is slated to be released in February. The album comes after lead singer/songwriter Adrianne Lenker’s two solo album releases in 2020 called “songs” and “instrumentals,” and guitarist Buck Meek’s 2021 solo record “Two Saviors.” Big Thief has been a stalwart in the indie rock scene since 2016, when their debut, “Masterpiece,” was released. In the years since, Big Thief has put out a stream of experimental, lyrically driven music, while their albums, especially Lenker’s vocals and lyrics, are still distinct enough to stand out amongst the crowded indie rock field. “Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You” will be a double-album with 20 tracks, recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic. The album will be released on Feb. 11 via 4AD, their record label.
Grimes – “Book 1.”
One of The Tiger’s senior news reporters, Olivia Jackson, is looking forward to Grimes’ new music. Grimes released a single, “Player of Games” on Dec. 3 from her forthcoming album “Book 1.” Jackson states, “Grimes is a really innovative and creative artist. Knowing that she produces and writes nearly all of her songs always makes me look forward to new releases. I believe this album will reflect more of her personal life and that’s exciting to expect.” Grimes’ personal life has recently been broadcast in the media, following a separation from her former partner, Elon Musk. Exact details for “Book 1” are still to be announced.
Mitski – “Laurel Hell”
Mitski is set to release her sixth full-length album “Laurel Hell” in February, following her breakthrough “Be the Cowboy” in 2018 that shot her to stardom. On Spotify, Mitski described “Laurel Hell” as having an “effervescent 1980s sound,” continuing the pop sound of “Be the Cowboy” and departing more from Mitski’s earlier indie rock roots. Mitski has released three singles from her upcoming album so far; the sound is lush, and the production is sound, slightly reminiscent of Lorde’s “Melodrama” or Japanese Breakfast’s “Jubilee.” Of the three singles released, “The Only Heartbreaker” is a shining example of the “effervescent 1980s sound” Mitski described, with its sparkling synth riff that continues throughout the track. “Laurel Hell” will be released on Feb. 4 via Dead Oceans.
Beach House – “Once Twice Melody”
The dream pop duo, lead singer Victoria Legrand and guitarist Alex Scally, are back with their eighth studio album “Once Twice Melody.” The LP is scheduled to be released in the middle of February. Like Big Thief’s new album, “Once Twice Melody” is slated to be a double-album, with 18 tracks. The album will be presented in four chapters, chapters one and two — each consisting of four songs — have already been released. “Once Twice Melody” is the first album to be produced entirely by the duo. Of the eight tracks released, the band maintains Legrand’s hallmark vocals, Scally’s guitar work and Beach House’s signature production style. The band states on Spotify about the LP, “[w]hile there are a lot of new sounds, many of the drum machines, organs, keyboards, and tones that listeners may associate with previous BEACH HOUSE records are still present throughout many of the compositions.” “Once Twice Melody” will be released on Feb. 18 via Sub Pop.
