Participating in two tournaments within the past week, Clemson’s women golfers represented well, with one golfer finishing in the top 20 individually in both the Reynolds Lake Oconee Invite from Feb. 17 to Feb. 19 as well as the Moon Golf Invitational from Feb. 19 to Feb. 21.
As the women’s golf team only has nine people, it could not have a full team for the Reynolds Lake Oconee Invite in Eatonton, Georgia, but it still had three golfers participate.
Junior Annabelle Pancake and sophomore Melena Barrientos both tied for sixth individually and were both five over par. The pair started off well, finishing the first round 2-over-par 74.
However, things derailed for Barrientos in the second round, as she had a 6-over-par 78 score to finish that round. Still, she recovered in the final round with a 69. Pancake, on the other hand, remained consistent, scoring a 74 in the first and second rounds and 73 in the third.
The third golfer for Clemson in this tournament, Gabriella Tomanka, finished No. 40 with a score of 17-over-par. The junior’s first two rounds were pretty similar, with a 79 followed by an 80, but she finished strong with a 74 in the final round.
In the Moon Golf Invitational, the Tigers did have enough golfers to form a full team. While LSU won the tournament at 30-under-par 72, Clemson did finish No. 6 out of the 17 participating colleges at 10-under-par.
The first day of the tournament was the best day, with Clemson finishing 9-under-par and putting them in third place. However, over the next two days, the Tigers were only 1-under-par. This drop-off left room for the other teams to catch up, resulting in their sixth-place finish.
Individually, senior Savannah Grewal had the best score at 4-under-par, which left her at No. 17 among the individual golfers. Grewal is the leading golfer right now for the Tigers, averaging 72.29 per round, and she has finished in the top 10 this year; Barrientos and sophomore Chloe Holder have also finished in the top 10 in a tournament this year.
Holder, who is from Anderson, South Carolina, was one of two Clemson golfers to tie at No. 23 with 3-under-par. The other was fellow sophomore Katherine Schuster, who finished under par for the second time this year. Freshmen Isabella Rawl and Sydney Roberts also participated, both finishing over par.
The next golf tournament for the women will start on March 4 at the Gator Invitational, followed by the Clover Cup starting on March 10.
