Clemson University Facilities has put out a plan for a construction bid to improve the reflection pond located in front of Cooper Library.
Clemson plans to widen the sidewalks surrounding the reflection pond, as well as add a variety of botanicals to the outdoor area. This expansion of the sidewalks surrounding the pond will offer an “enhanced landscape” and create an easier flow of pedestrians utilizing the walkways, according to the Facilities website.
While access to Library Bridge above the reflection pond will not be affected by this construction, the construction will affect sidewalks in the area. Sidewalks closest to the reflection pond will not be usable, and the walkways closest to Martin Hall and Kinard Laboratory will be designated as the main walkways.
University Facilities noted that accessible parking spaces located by Cooper Library will also be affected by this construction, as part of the lot will be designated as a staging and stockpile area.
University Facilities also plans to install a variety of trees, shrubs and mulch around the reflection pond to revamp the area as well, with demolition including the existing sidewalk around the reflection pond, surrounding plant beds, metal guard rails and other miscellaneous features.
A temporary chain link fence will be installed around the perimeter of the work site while construction is underway to protect the area.
A contract has yet to be awarded for the project, meaning the cost of the site improvements remains uncertain. However, the current base bid amount for these improvements is around $2.71 million. Once a bid is selected, the construction start date will be released.
