When you first start college, it can feel overwhelming. As you begin your college journey, it’s important to know you’re not alone; pretty much everyone else is in the same boat as you. No matter what, you will find your people; you just might need to know where to look.
Getting involved at Clemson University is the absolute best way to make friends, build connections and create a memorable college experience. Some people may believe that the only way to meet people is through Greek life, but Clemson offers countless opportunities for students to find their place on campus, whether it is through clubs, sports, service organizations or campus events. They might require you to step outside of your comfort zone, which can be scary, but it’s so worth it.
By far the easiest way to meet new people is by joining student organizations. Clemson has hundreds of clubs that match a wide range of interests, including academic organizations, cultural groups, recreational clubs and professional societies. Students interested in leadership might find their place in student government. Those who tend to be more creative can find their home through music, theatre and art.
The best way to find these clubs is at the Tiger Prowl club fairs that happen at the beginning of each semester. These can be very overwhelming, but they’re absolutely worth going to nonetheless.
Another major thing that Clemson is known for is its school spirit, especially surrounding football. But don’t limit yourself to football; there are so many other sports at Clemson, and attending games or joining a club sport is a sure way to meet like-minded people. There are also many student media organizations, like The Tiger, that cover sports.
Volunteering and community service also provide meaningful ways to get involved. Many organizations host fundraising events and outreach programs that allow students to give back while meeting others who share similar values.
This last one might seem a bit obvious, but it’s true; you have to actually talk to people to meet them. Some of my favorite ways of meeting new friends are introducing myself to people I sit down next to in class, knocking on my dorm neighbor’s doors and hanging out in common spaces.
Getting involved does not require everything at once. The most important step is just showing up. By getting involved and meeting new people, students can truly create their Clemson family.
