Clemson extended its undefeated streak to start the women’s basketball season with an 81-33 win over the Presbyterian Blue Hose on Monday at Littlejohn Coliseum.
The Tigers now sit at 3-0, beating each of their opponents by over 30 points to start the season.
The Tigers’ dominant start to the season could be attributed to the smothering defense played throughout the game. This was no different in Monday’s game, as Clemson only allowed the Blue Hose to score double digits in the first quarter. Clemson also forced 17 turnovers in the game, which the team turned into 19 points, as well as blocking four shots.
While defense has been a specialty for the Tigers, the offensive game has stayed strong, scoring over 75 points in each game to start the season. Clemson guard Loyal McQueen led the Tigers in scoring for the second straight game with 20 points, along with six assists. Forward Anya Poole also had a strong performance, leading the bench unit with 14 points.
On top of these impressive scoring performances, the Tigers showed their ability to make space and find an open player once again, recording 22 assists in the win.
Clemson’s offensive dominance comes from finding open looks in the paint this year. The Tigers scored 48 points in the paint while holding Presbyterian (0-3) to only 18 points in the paint.
Offensive rebounds and second-chance points also aided Clemson in its win, as the team pulled down six offensive rebounds and scored 11 second-chance points.
Despite a strong start to the season, Clemson faces its first true challenge next Wednesday, when the team will host the No. 1 South Carolina Gamecocks. The Gamecocks are the defending national champions and have started the season with a strong 2-0 start. The Tigers will look to defeat the Gamecocks for the first time since 2009.
