As someone who naturally loves to learn, I often find myself craving knowledge, but not necessarily the knowledge that requires hours of prep work, homework and exams. Luckily for me, I found a podcast that was free of stress and full of fun facts and delightful guests.
“Ologies,” a science communication podcast by Alie Ward, provides a getaway from the demands of life as you are introduced to topics you thought you would never care about.
Every Tuesday, Ward brings a new “ologist” onto the show. These guests are seasoned professionals who kindly donate their time so that normal people like you and I can learn about topics such as oneirology, the study of dreams, and coffeeology, the study of coffee.
There are a plethora of topics to choose from when deciding which episode to listen to next. Eventually, you might find yourself setting a goal of listening to almost all 450 episodes — with each listen, you will find more things to love.
Every topic seems more dazzling than the last, as Ward comically translates fancy words and concepts so that anyone can understand topics like dark matter, ADHD and breadmaking. Along with these traditional episodes, “Ologies” also has a spin-off show called “Smologies,” which are shorter and profanity-free episodes with much less content than the traditional episodes.
Now, do not expect your stereotypical and dull science podcast with simple question-and-answer replies. “Ologies” has an amazing ability to build community with its listeners. Ward incorporates fan questions, collected prior to recording, into every typical episode. Additionally, every episode’s revenue is donated to a cause of the “ologist’s” choosing.
No matter what your interests are, there is an “ology” for everyone. So curl up in a cozy chair or casually walk to class and indulge yourself in our beautiful, weird and wonderful world with none other than Alie Ward.
You can listen to “Ologies,” including the newest episode called “Domestic Phytology,” the study of houseplants, on any podcast platform.
