Clemson United has been shockingly eliminated from the ACC tournament in the first round after a 1-0 loss to Pitt at Historic Riggs Field.
The result comes as a major upset as the Tigers, 8-5-3, and Panthers were seeded No. 4 and No. 13, respectively.
The lone goal came in the eighth minute when forward Lasse Dahl found himself with time and space at the edge of the penalty arc, firing a strike into the bottom right corner.
Throughout the rest of the half, the Panthers, 6-6-5, continued to pose a threat with through balls over the top of the Clemson back line.
The second half was pure domination by Clemson United. The Tigers controlled the majority of possession and amounted to a total of 13 shots to Pitt’s 4 during the second half, yet none were enough to find the back of the net.
“The game can be cruel sometimes,” head coach Mike Noonan said.
The match marked the second time the sides met this season, with the first resulting in a 3-2 win for Clemson. Including the fact that Pitt only acquired one win in the ACC regular season, the Tigers were expected to win.
Although not guaranteed, Clemson’s postseason may not be over just yet. The NCAA tournament has 26 at-large spots that the Tigers may be selected for. Clemson United is currently ranked No. 30 in the NCAA men’s soccer RPI, and with the ACC arguably known as the best conference in college soccer, its fourth-place finish and overall record may be favorable.
At-large selections will be announced on Monday, Nov. 17.
