The Clemson University Police Department recently announced that they would be installing breathalyzers at the entrances to all dorms on the Greek Quad.
The dorms’ doors will be equipped with small breathalyzers similar to the ignition interlock devices some offenders are required to have in their cars after DUI convictions. Students will be required to blow into the device while scanning their CUIDs, a sobriety test in and of itself, and test with a blood alcohol level of 0.02 or below, the same as is required for drivers under 21 in South Carolina. If students fail to pass the test, the door will not unlock.
This new policy resulted from ongoing problems with large volumes of vomit clogging the almost century-old plumbing, similar to issues with semen in Byrnes Hall last year.
Facilities expect to have the breathalyzers installed by next Friday in Wannamaker, Donaldson and both Simpson Halls, with Bradley, Bowen and Norris Halls being completed the week after.
