Traffic on Tiger Boulevard has been a significant problem for many years, and the South Carolina Department of Transportation has devised a final solution for the problem.
A new elevated freeway is set to be built on top of the existing four-lane road, taking off in front of Publix and running overtop across Lake Hartwell.
This is part of a larger project to upgrade U.S. Highway 123 into an interstate from Atlanta to Greenville in an effort to relieve traffic on Interstate 85.
The Clemson section will consist of a massive bridge over Tiger Boulevard, with the current four-lane road being maintained underneath to allow access to College Ave and all the existing businesses.
A new expressway will also be built south of Seneca to Toccoa, Georgia, to connect to U.S. Highway 23 and Interstate 985.
It was also announced that around half of Easley will be bulldozed for an upgraded roadway into Greenville, a move which many residents applaud both for the road improvements and the destruction of one of the region’s greatest causes for shame.
However, some students and residents are concerned about the aesthetics of the new mega overpass.
“Don’t worry, we’ll paint it all bright orange; you’ll be able to see it from space,” replied David Hobbit, SCDOT senior district three engineer and Clemson alumnus. “It’ll help with safety too.”
The Clemson project is expected to cost almost 500 million dollars and was reportedly started after a carload of SCDOT engineers got caught in Tiger Boulevard traffic and called the secretary of transportation.
