Clemson baseball’s Caden Grice delivered on both sides of the ball for the Tigers in the series finale against Florida State to help the Tigers win 6-2 in Tallahassee, Florida, on Saturday, April 8.
Although the Tigers (19-14, 4-8 ACC) dropped the first game of the series on Thursday, April 6, they bounced back on Friday night to tie the series 1-1. In Saturday’s rubber match, Grice’s performance on both the mound and at the plate helped Clemson to secure its first ACC series win of the season.
The left-handed pitcher started on the mound, where he logged a career-high 6.1 innings. Grice (2-1) struck out five batters, and the Seminoles (13-18, 4-11 ACC) remained scoreless until he let up two runs in the seventh. He was relieved by right-hander Nick Clayton, who allowed just one hit for his 2.2 innings.
The Greer, South Carolina, native performed just as dominant when up to bat. After a Blake Wright run in the first, Grice racked up four RBIs from his second career grand slam in the second inning, a ball he launched 412 feet at 112 mph.
After the second inning, the Tigers did not score for the remainder of the game but still were able to out-hit the Seminoles nine to six.
Fans should expect to see more dominant performances from Grice as the season progresses. He currently holds a .355 batting average in addition to a 3.55 ERA. Thanks to his strong day on the road, Clemson has improved to 4-8 in the ACC. The Tigers will host their next conference series at Doug Kingsmore Stadium against Notre Dame, beginning Friday, April 14 at 8 p.m. EDT.
