Welcome to the Sports Notebook! Each week, The Tiger will give you a look at what’s going on in Clemson Athletics this week with a summary of what happened during the previous week and what’s ahead for the new week. NOTE: Any of the prior weekend’s results in any sport will not be reflected in this article.
FOOTBALL
What has happened: Clemson wrapped up National Signing Day on Wednesday, Feb. 7 with the sixth ranked recruiting class, according to ESPN with the addition of wide receiver Justyn Ross. Outside of Ross, the 2018 recruiting class was essentially done before National Signing Day with the new early signing period, which allows players to sign in December. The early signees included athlete Derion Kendrick and quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who are already on campus for the spring semester.
Coming up: Spring football practice begins on Wednesday. The annual Orange and White spring football game will wrap up the 15 practices on Saturday, April 14 at 2:30 p.m.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
What has happened: Brad Brownell’s Tigers are currently struggling, as they lost three straight games last week against FSU, Duke and Virginia Tech. Clemson remains in the Top 15 and hosted Georgia Tech on Senior Day and Military Appreciation Day this past Saturday.
Coming up: Clemson will host Florida State on Wednesday at 9 p.m. in Littlejohn and will then head up to the Carrier Dome on Saturday to take on Jim Boeheim and the Syracuse Orange.
BASEBALL
What has happened: Following a series sweep of William and Mary to open the 2018 season, the Tigers continued their winning ways by beating Furman in dominant fashion, 12-4 in a midweek series game. Clemson hosted Dallas Baptist this past weekend. See this week’s story from sports editor Allison Daniel for more in-depth details on how the weekend went.
Coming up: Clemson will host another midweek game on Wednesday as the Winthrop Eagles will make the two-hour trek from Rock Hill for a 4 p.m. contest before the Tigers play in-state rival South Carolina on Friday at 7 p.m. in Columbia, 3 p.m. on Saturday at Flour Field in Greenville and 2 p.m. on Sunday in Clemson.
GOLF
What has happened: Clemson trailed Georgia Tech by eight shots heading into the final round of the Puerto Rico classic on Tuesday. However, Doc Redman made birdies on the last two holes and Turk Pettit finished second and led Clemson to a comeback one-shot victory. The win was head coach Larry Penley’s 75th career win.
Coming up: The Tigers will have two weeks off before the Bandon Dunes Championship begins on Sunday, March 11.
TRACK AND FIELD
What has happened: The Indoor ACC Championships started on Thursday, and the Tigers started out strong, particularly on the women’s side as Kamryn McIntosh, Olivia James, Fellan Ferguson and Grace Barnett set a school record in the women’s distance medley relay as they posted a time of 10:58.83, finishing second overall. The men finished third, posting a season best time of 9:41.02 led by John Lewis, Deonte Tolbert, Malik Epps and James Quattlebaum.
Coming up: Clemson will have some time off before heading out to College Station, TX for the NCAA Indoor Championships that begin on Friday, March 9 and wrap on the following Saturday.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
What has happened: Head coach Audra Smith and the Tiger women wrapped up the 2017-18 home schedule with a 61-55 loss against Wake Forest this past Wednesday. Danielle Edwards and Kobi Thornton led the Tigers in scoring with 17 points apiece. The loss drops their record to 11-18 overall.
Coming up: The Tigers will head up to Greensboro, NC for the ACC Tournament which begins on Wednesday, Feb. 28.
