The Clemson men’s basketball team hit the road for the first time this season and suffered a loss to Boise State, falling 84-71 at ExtraMile Arena in Boise, Idaho.
The Tigers sustained their first early setback this season against the nonconference opponent after beginning the previous season on a nine-game winning streak, which included a victory over the Broncos.
Clemson’s leading scorer, Chase Hunter, dominated in the first half, scoring 20 points on eight of 10 shots from the field. The veteran point guard continued his impressive performance throughout the contest, finishing with 30 points and six assists on 57/50/100 shooting splits.
In a game filled with inside scoring, Hunter did all he could to get momentum going from behind the arc, making four of the Tigers’ six. But it wasn’t enough to usher Clemson (3-1) to a win.
Head coach Brad Brownell and the Tigers kept it close heading into halftime, facing a 36-35 deficit to the Broncos (3-1) after streaky shooting in the first half.
However, the team did not pick up steam in the second half, shooting only 32.4% from the field and 25% from 3-point range. They also fell into foul trouble, with starting forward Chauncey Wiggins fouling out and the team accounting for 24 personal fouls overall.
Boise State forward Andrew Meadow took advantage of these struggles, recording 18 points and nine rebounds while being the X-factor for his team’s win.
Tyson Degenhart, Boise State’s leading scorer, was a key matchup heading into this contest, but Clemson’s frontcourt could not contain him either, finishing with a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds.
The Tigers look to bounce back later this week in a home matchup at Littlejohn Coliseum against Radford on Thursday.
