Clemson took care of business against the Marshall Thundering Herd, winning 8-3 at McWhorter Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The win marked the fifth straight victory for the Tigers.
After a slow start, the Tigers (8-6) came out swinging in the third inning. Second baseman Julia Knowler built upon a multi-hit performance against Villanova with a double to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. A walk and a double from Aby Vieira brought in another run and set up the scene for Ava Wilson, who followed behind. The freshman belted a three-run shot to extend the lead to five runs.
Marshall responded in the fifth with a two-RBI triple from freshman Diamond Leslie, who made it home shortly after off a Kasia Parks double to bring the score within two runs.
With momentum temporarily shifting, the Tigers fired back, with freshman Marian Collins blasting a single home run to lead off the inning. A pair of Clemson runs gave the Tigers what proved to be an insurmountable lead en route to an 8-3 victory. The win marks the third straight game the Tigers have held their opposition to under three runs, doing so against Elon and Villanova on Feb. 21.
In a game of exceptional power hitting, Vieira brought the contact, going three-for-three and scoring one run and one RBI. Clemson pitcher Brooke McCubbin notched seven strikeouts in 5.2 innings, allowing three runs in the victory. The win marked her second of the season. Macey Cintron shut the door in relief with a hitless 1.1 innings to close out the victory, marking her first save of the season.
