Clemson softball went on the road to Athens, Georgia and beat the No. 11 Bulldogs in their own stadium — a massive win for the Tigers, who struggled in some of their first games early in the season. What was originally anticipated to be a closer game was a blowout win for the Tigers.
The team recorded three home runs on Wednesday evening, including a two-run homer from Kylee Johnson in the top of the sixth that sealed the game. The Tigers out-hit the Bulldogs 12-4 in what was the Tigers’ first road win against Georgia.
Tigers secured the win by:
Keeping the bats hot
Clemson had 12 hits on Wednesday, and the team was able to hit timely RBIs. In addition, the lineup also had significant firepower the entire night. Mac Pavese, Marian Collins and Kylee Johnson each had home runs.
Utilizing their stellar defense
The Tigers had a lights-out performance on defense, holding Georgia to a lone run. Sierra Maness, the transfer pitcher from nearby USC Upstate, recorded eight total strikeouts and walked only three Georgia hitters. The tremendous defensive effort from Clemson caused Georgia to leave seven runners on base, compared to two for the Tigers.
Asserting continued dominance over opponents
Clemson has outscored its opponents 37–1 in its last five games. This shows the incredible resilience of a relatively new squad of players on the team. It seems Clemson has found its groove after a shaky start to the season.
The Tigers returned to action on Friday, hosting Wofford at 12:30 p.m. in the Tiger Invitational.
