One season ago, Abby Dunning was playing for Boston College. Fast forward to the offseason, Dunning decides to transfer and play for coach John Rittman and the reigning ACC Softball Tournament champion Clemson Tigers.
On Saturday afternoon, Dunning delivered another epic performance on the mound as she shut down Georgia Tech’s lineup and pitched a no-hitter. This performance was a moment for Dunning to remember, as well as for the fans watching the game.
Prior to the series, Dunning had dealt with some injury trouble and had just gotten back into the pitching rotation. However, this did not hold Dunning back from producing a dominant performance.
“She pitched really well tonight. Dunning had command and kept them off balance,” said coach Rittman after the game in an interview.
“She has got the velocity, and she can change in and out … She had a changeup a couple of times that they had to be ready for today,” he continued.
As Rittman recognizes, Dunning’s strength is versatility. Her ability to be unpredictable and adaptive in-game make her a must-see for fans.
“The defense was phenomenal … Georgia Tech’s got a great offense, and I was just trying to go out there and win every pitch.” said Dunning after the game.
Dunning was also quick to praise her teammate Corri Hicks, who delivered the solo home run that sealed the game, 1-0. She also stated that her favorite memory thus far as a new player at Clemson was getting the series win over Georgia Tech.
The season is still young, and Clemson softball has a long way to go if they hope to repeat as ACC Champions. However, this team showed incredible grit and determination behind Dunning on Saturday.
