Clemson gymnastics competed in the second session of the ACC Championships as a No. 3 seed alongside Stanford, California and NC State, and pulled off an iconic upset to win its first title.
In just their third season and the first one under new leadership, the Tigers took home the trophy with a final score of 197.100, upsetting Stanford, the regular season champions, by just 0.025 of a point.
Due to the No. 1 seed following traditional Olympic rotation, the Tigers started off on beam, which has been one of the most consistent rotations all season. Freshman Emma Malewski scored a 9.900 on the event, followed by two scores of 9.850 from seniors Brie Clark and Lilly Lippeatt. The rotation ended with a score of 49.125 as they prepared to head to the floor.
Clark is ranked No. 7 nationally on floor and No. 1 in the ACC, and she performed like it on Saturday. Clark closed out the second rotation with a 9.925, and with three scores of 9.850, the Tigers started to build their momentum heading into the third rotation.
The Tigers recorded their second-highest vault score ever during the meet, led by Madison Minner, who scored a 9.900.
As Clemson headed to the fourth rotation, the Tigers sat in second behind Stanford. It wasn’t until Quinn Kuhl’s final bar routine score came in that the Tigers were officially named ACC champions, upsetting No. 7 Stanford and No. 14 California. The Tigers had four scores of 9.900, one of which included Kuhl’s final routine of the meet.
The Tigers ended the meet with a score of 197.100 to Stanford’s 197.075.
The NCAA Selection Show will take place on March 23 at noon, and the postseason officially begins April 1.
