The great outdoors got its name for a reason. While college life does require studying, academic work and other commitments that may keep you from enjoying your time outside, it’s still important to make time for outdoor activities and to take a break from the grind. Luckily, Clemson has a host of fantastic spots to do just that.
Bowman Field
Volleyball, frisbees and spike ball make Bowman Field the epitome of the college green space. This expansive field located next to the iconic Tillman Hall allows students to unwind between or after their classes. Shaded on the south side by towering trees, students can often be found playing games, relaxing on towels and blankets and even taking time to study outside. All this makes Bowman one of the top student destinations on a nice day.
Table Rock State Park
One of the best outdoor areas available in the upstate is Table Rock State Park — a 3,000-acre state park located roughly an hour drive away from Clemson. With two separate lakes within its boundaries, mountain trails to hike and an unbeatable view from the top of the namesake formation, Table Rock is a must-see for Clemson students looking to spend a day in nature.
South Carolina Botanical Garden
Located just across Perimeter Road from the main campus, the South Carolina Botanical Garden is an excellent opportunity for students who can’t stray too far from campus to still experience nature at its fullest extent. Inside, the gardens boast multiple walking trails, trial gardens, geological museums and a gallery for local artists. Open year-round from sunrise to sunset, it is a fantastic space to visit any time of year.
Snow Center, Lake Hartwell
Finally, for what might be the best outdoor opportunities a Clemson student can experience, look no further than Lake Hartwell. Wrapping around Clemson’s campus to the west, the lake offers a myriad of opportunities for students to enjoy the outdoors. Y Beach is a popular warm-weather destination, with the beach covered in towels and lounging students. The Snow Center offers kayak and paddleboard rentals, along with outdoor lounge areas for students to relax. And for those students looking for a more active approach, many of Clemson’s aquatic clubs and sports, such as club rowing, club sailing and club waterski, make their homes on the lake and are open to students.
