Clemson students are participating in a volunteer effort with Feed & Seed Co. to help produce affordable food for families in the upstate throughout the fall semester.

Through networks, programs and facilities, Feed & Seed Co. works to provide food to families in need by creating a sustainable food system built on profitable farms and independent markets.

Designed as a multipurpose facility to support local farmers and the community, it’s a space that provides food growers and makers with the infrastructure and support systems needed for success.

Feed & Seed sources local food within the Upstate Food and Nutrition System with the help of volunteers.

“Some perfectly good food never gets eaten. It might be because a farmer can’t afford to harvest the entire field without a confirmed buyer,” Mary Hipp, the board chair of Feed and Seed, said. “For our farmers, we provide greater security to invest in producing marketable products where they have a comparative advantage in the industry while providing more local produce to our community.”

The Center for Student Leadership and Engagement at Clemson is working to collaborate with volunteer efforts near the University to provide students with ways to gather community service hours and help nonprofit organizations if needed, according to Kate Radford, the director for leadership education & development.

If students sign up to volunteer, the University will provide breakfast and transportation to volunteer at the Feed & Seed location in Greenville.

The dates to volunteer are as listed below:
Oct. 3 from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
Nov. 28 from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
Dec. 12 from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

To sign up to volunteer, go to TigerQuest and search for “Feed & Seed” to fill out the form.
