The No. 25 Clemson women’s soccer team drew with the South Carolina Gamecocks (2-0-3) by a score of 1-1 in Columbia on Thursday night.
The first half of this Palmetto Series matchup ended scoreless, with the Tigers (4-1-1) outshooting the Gamecocks in shots on goal 7-4.
However, the Gamecocks returned eagerly after the break, getting on the board early in the second half with a goal from forward Catherine Barry, assisted by Katie Shea Collins.
The Gamecocks held their lead as the second half progressed and were prepared to celebrate a rivalry win at home until the 89th minute when a cross from junior forward Maria Manousos allowed sophomore midfielder Christian Brathwaite to find the back of the net for the Tigers.
It was the Georgia transfer’s second goal as a Tiger and Manousos’ second assist of the
season.
Goalkeepers for the Tigers and the Gamecocks, Nona Reason and Christina Tsaousis, respectively, helped keep the game competitive, each recording three saves.
After the game, Clemson head coach Eddie Radwanksi gave his thoughts.
“I actually thought we played quite well throughout the game. We had a lot of the ball, a little disappointed we gave up a goal two minutes into the half but credit to our kids because all the way down to the final whistle, we didn’t give up.
“They didn’t give up, they kept fighting and kept battling. I thought we deserved something from the game, and I was glad we were able to get that ball late. It was a good sign of watching determination and grit come together.”
The Tigers head to Charlotte, North Carolina, this weekend, where they’ll face the University of North Carolina at Charlotte 49ers on Sunday at 7 p.m.
