The Tigers defeated the Pittsburgh Panthers 78-75 in overtime, behind an impressive team performance.
Clemson had five players with double-digit points — Chase Hunter, Ian Schieffelin, Jaeden Zackery, Dillon Hunter and Chauncey Wiggins.
As the overtime period was nearing a close, Chase Hunter hit a clutch three-pointer from beyond the arc to grant the Tigers a five-point lead, thereby closing out the contest. Following his shot, the Panthers were unable to get a shot off until there was just a few seconds remaining.
Clemson (15-4, 7-1 ACC) acquired a lead early, as they entered halftime with a 40-30 lead. The Tigers spent the first few minutes of the second half extending their lead to 14, giving them a chance to run away with the contest. However, Pitt (12-6, 3-4 ACC) came storming back, obtaining multiple leads in the second half.
Though Clemson led for a large portion of the game, there were seven lead changes across the matchup.
The Tigers had an opportunity to win in regulation, having possession in a tie game with the ability to control the ball until the end of regulation. However, Hunter began to drive to the rim and was ultimately denied, which pushed the game into an extra period.
As a team, the Tigers scored a season-high 14 three-pointers, helping them propel past the Panthers. Hunter led the team with three 3-pointers as the team shot 51.9% from beyond the arc throughout the contest.
Schieffelin acquired another double-double, tallying 15 points and 11 rebounds. His physicality and aggressiveness has continued to play a significant factor in Clemson’s ability to succeed, though he has had to play with back spasms over the course of the last few games. He also added three assists in his 39 minutes of action.
Clemson will be back in action on Wednesday when the team will host Syracuse in another ACC matchup at Littlejohn Coliseum.
