Providing a welcoming environment for college women can be difficult for some clubs and classroom settings to accomplish. However, Her Campus has always been open specifically for women who are looking for a safe space where they can express themselves, use their voices and be a part of an interconnected community.
The Clemson chapter of Her Campus works to empower women through writing, career development and honest conversations about what life in college is truly like. The main goal of the chapter on campus is to uplift and empower Clemson women.
“Her Campus Clemson was actually relaunched this year after being inactive, and rebuilding it from the ground up has been such a rewarding experience,” Emma Sandlin, vice president of Her Campus at Clemson, told The Tiger in an interview. “We’ve created a space on campus where women at Clemson can connect with other women that are passionate about the same things.”
If a college woman is having difficulty with a problem too sensitive to discuss with personal acquaintances, the student can rely on Her Campus’s publication when in need of something to relate to or gather advice from.
For example, there is a section on the Her Campus website dedicated to wellness for women, ranging from advice for common, contagious illnesses on college campuses to valuable mental health resources.
“All of our articles are published on the national Her Campus website, we get opportunities to work with national brands and we follow the Her Campus editorial standards,” Sandlin said. “Nationals provides us branding resources, campaign opportunities and support, but our chapter is fully student led and Clemson focused.”
Clemson’s Her Campus chapter is not only limited to an online publication, but it is also able to connect with other college women through social media campaigns, as well as on-campus events and fundraisers.
The first fundraiser the club held was a bake sale on Library Bridge, in which girls from the club baked and sold homemade desserts. The profits are being used to help fund future bonding events.
As for upcoming events, Her Campus at Clemson is collaborating with TigerFit to hold a Piloga class, which is a combination of Pilates and yoga. This relaxation session will provide the girls with a chance to embrace movement after a long day of class, while also devoting time to meet girls from another on-campus organization.
The club will also host a resume and LinkedIn workshop with Clemson’s Center for Career and Professional Development to prepare students for upcoming interviews and internship searches.
A majority of the meetings this semester have been dedicated to coordinating campaigns with brands like Jo Malone London and Nair, for which Clemson’s chapter was selected through Her Campus Nationals.
Her Campus at Clemson has changed the lives of women throughout the University, enriching their knowledge about women’s health, relationships, career paths and more, all while offering opportunities for long-lasting friendships to form. Students are able to learn new skills regarding marketing campaigns, as well as find more about themselves as their voices develop in confidence.
“I’m so grateful we were able to restart Her Campus at Clemson this year. In just a few months, I’ve met the most inspiring and supportive group of girls. It’s been such an uplifting experience and watching this club grow has been one of the highlights of my college experience,” Sandlin continued.
Her Campus at Clemson meets every other Thursday in the Watt Family Innovation Center.
