The Clemson women’s basketball team dominated Appalachian State at Littlejohn Coliseum on Sunday afternoon, walking away with a 78-59 victory.
Holding the lead by eight, Clemson opened the fourth quarter with a controlled defense and an overpowering offensive front. Appalachian State responded with a burst of 3-pointers, but was unable to overcome Clemson’s rhythm and consistency.
Senior Taylor Johnson-Matthews delivered a strong scoring performance, hitting jumpers, free throws and a clutch layup for a 20-point outing. Alongside Johnson-Matthews, Mia Moore contributed to Clemson’s offensive driving force — scoring points, forcing turnovers and securing rebounds.
“I thought Mia and Taylor were very aggressive, getting in there and then making the right plays,” head coach Shawn Poppie said. “Getting in there doesn’t mean you always shoot it, and I thought that in the first half, we were in spots but not moving enough to create double gaps. I thought we were much, much better in the second half doing that.”
The pair is the first to score 20 or more points in a single game for the Tigers since Amari Robinson and Dayshanette Harris did so last February.
Clemson’s powerful presence was on full display as the fourth quarter progressed, with strong showings at the free-throw line by Rachael Rose and Raven Thompson to help extend the lead even further. Appalachian State struggled to keep up as Clemson pulled away.
The Tigers will return to Littlejohn Coliseum on Sunday, Dec. 14, to take on Pittsburgh for the team’s second ACC matchup of the season. The faceoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. and will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
