The Tigers are off to a hot start. Women’s lacrosse has played twice at the Clemson Lacrosse Complex in the past week, cruising to dominant victories both times.
No. 8 Clemson opened up its season with a win against Vanderbilt on Feb. 7, 20-5, before returning on Tuesday, Feb. 10, to defeat Furman, 18-1.
Nine different goal scorers got in on the action on Feb. 7.
Former No. 1 recruit Alexa Spallina wasted no time logging her first career points, assisting Mikaela Mooney’s first goal as a Tiger 37 seconds into the contest.
Spallina logged five assists alongside two goals in her debut. Brooke Goldstein netted five goals and two assists, tying Spallina for a team-high 7 points for the afternoon.
Kayla MacLeod returned from injury and scored twice, assisting another. She was one of six players to score 3 or more points, joining Aubrey Eisfeld, Emma Penczek, Bridget Babcock, Mooney, Spallina and Goldstein.
Anna Brown scored the 20th goal of the game, her first as a Tiger after being sidelined with an injury for the last two seasons.
Tuesday was the Spallina show. A six-goal, four-assist performance increased her season total to eight goals and nine assists.
Regan Byrne followed close behind, scoring four times in the second half. Her second score, a behind-the-back goal just before the end of the third quarter, was No. 7 on SportsCenter Top Ten on Wednesday.
Natalie Shurtleff grabbed her first goal of the season alongside five draw controls. Kira Balis also grabbed six from the draw control circle, totaling 10 so far this season.
Penczek scored a hat trick, Eisfeld netted two, Brown scored yet again and graduate transfer Maddigan Miller logged her first goal in Clemson Orange.
The Tigers look ahead to Saturday, where they will once again play at home, this time against No. 5 Stanford. Clemson aims to avenge last season’s 14-8 loss to the Cardinal.
