Tiger’s Two Cents: What to do about an intimidating professor

“What can I do about a professor who enjoys trying to intimidate people?”

– an anonymous senior chemical engineering major

Hello, thank you for writing in! This sounds like a pretty tough situation to be in. Professors are meant to be there to provide support and a safe place for students to learn and grow, so when they go against this, that isn’t okay.

My advice to you would be to not put up with this behavior just because they are in a higher position and may appear to have more power than you. Trust me when I say this is not true. As a student who is paying to be here, you should receive professors who treat you with respect and professionalism.

In this situation, it may help to reach out to other classmates. See if others in your class are feeling the same way. If you notice a trend, then I would suggest taking this issue to your advisor or the head of the department. I hope this helps!
