Clemson basketball forward Ian Schieffelin has joined the Clemson football team, announcing the switch on his Instagram on Friday.
In one of the most interesting moves in Clemson Athletics history, the senior will use a graduate year to collect another year of eligibility. The Loganville, Georgia, native will switch his basketball shoes for football cleats, which he has experience playing in high school.
Schieffelin also played football in middle school as quarterback and tight end alongside former Clemson running back Phil Mafah, and even won head coach Dabo Swinney’s seven-on-seven tournament at the end of his football camp.
“Son, there’s always a spot for you,” Swinney told Schieffelin.
Now, that spot is a reality.
The former Clemson basketball standout will play tight end, joining the likes of Olsen Patt-Henry, Josh Sapp and Christian Bentacur in the position room. The fourth tight end in the mix last season, Markus Dixon, moved to defensive end, which enticed the move for Schieffelin.
Standing at 6-foot-8 and 240 pounds, Swinney will look to use Schieffelin’s frame to get him involved on the field.
The 2024 ACC Most Improved Player averaged 12.4 points and 9.4 rebounds in the 2024-25 season, which saw Clemson win the most games in a season in program history. Known for his motor on the glass, he collected 20 rebounds in the Tigers’ win over Kentucky on Dec. 3, 2024.
On April 21, Schieffelin entered the transfer portal in the hopes of redeeming an extra year of eligibility. The switch to football grants him this extra year, and he will play one final time in Clemson on the gridiron instead of the hardwood.
Swinney will look to incorporate Schieffelin in different ways throughout the football summer and fall camps ahead of Clemson’s opener against LSU on Aug. 30.
