It can feel like there is nothing for students to do during Clemson’s spring semester, especially now that football season is over. However, there are a variety of events for students to attend in the Clemson area beyond the realm of sports, each with its own entertaining attractions in store.
South Carolina Botanical Garden
Throughout the spring semester, the South Carolina Botanical Garden — located at 150 Discovery Lane, Clemson, SC 29634 — is hosting a range of experiences that will get you back in touch with nature.
Starting Feb. 10 from 3:30-5 p.m., the garden is hosting a workshop, “Garden Creativity: The Art of Indigo,” to mentor students through the ancient process of indigo dyeing. The details of the event reads: “By the end of the session, each participant will leave with beautifully hand-dyed textiles and a deeper appreciation for this age-old craft.” Registration closes on Feb. 6.
On Feb. 18, the garden will begin its Winged Wednesdays, which include a session of guided birdwatching every third Wednesday of the month from 8:30-9:30 a.m.
Every third Friday of the month, anyone can get to know the different areas of the garden by taking informational walks led by James Wilkins. Wilkins is a naturalist who demonstrates how to analyze native plants, plant ecosystems and their methods of supporting biodiversity.
Jervey Meadow concerts
Although these live shows aren’t free, the value of the memories will be priceless. On April 11, students will have the opportunity to go from a Clemson baseball game straight into a trio of concerts, without even moving locations.
After the Clemson baseball team hosts UNC Chapel Hill, headliners Jake Owen, Congress The Band and Jet Jurgensmeyer will commence the concert series.
According to the Clemson Athletics’ description, Owen “has released nine albums, headlined tours globally, and appeared in the movie ‘Our Friend.’”
Clemson Art Book Fair and Zine Fest
Clemson visual arts’ annual showcase of the books, zines, posters and other printed materials that graphic design students have poured their creative intellect into over the semester returns. This year’s event will take place on April 15 from 1-5 p.m. in the Gunnin Architecture Library in Lee Hall.
Supporting the innovative departments of the University is an integral part of the undergraduate and graduate experience, as it reveals the imaginative abilities that flow throughout the school’s student body.
There are also several additional exhibitions to attend hosted by the Clemson visual arts department this spring, in honor of the hard work students will be contributing to their projects throughout the semester.
Events related to the accomplishments of students, appreciating the natural environment, picking up new hobbies, stimulating our intellectual abilities and more are just around the corner if you are willing to experiment in new possibilities that may be outside of your comfort zone. A spring semester filled with joyous learning opportunities and days of fun awaits!
