Have you ever borrowed a friend’s TigerOne ID to go to the gym? Those days may soon be a thing of the past with the recent announcement from Clemson University. The announcement said in part that Campus Recreation membership suspensions for student ID misuse will increase from one week to 30 days.
This decision comes as a response to a large increase in ID credential swapping beginning in the Fall 2021 semester. As many online activities shifted back in-person, capacity limits in recreation centers and classrooms were lifted.
According to the Communications Director for Student Affairs, Philip Sikes, the increase in suspension length is designed to deter students from switching IDs in order to access campus. This was an issue that was virtually nonexistent prior to the 2020 implementation of COVID-19 health measures, becoming most prominent with the implementation of weekly COVID-19 testing beginning in spring of 2021. The University emphasizes the importance of testing in keeping recreational facilities open and operating at full capacity.
The membership suspension prevents access to the “Douthit Hills Fitness Center and Swann Fitness Center at Fike, renting equipment at Andy Quattlebaum Outdoor Education Center and fitness and outdoor programming,” said Sikes.
Sikes indicated that repeat offenders will be referred to the Office of Community and Ethical Standards (OCES) for further penalties, including a semester or 16-week-long ban from Campus Recreation membership.
These punishments will be placed upon both the student using the swapped ID as well as the student whose ID has been used. Students wishing to dispute their suspension will be referred to the OCES for investigation.
This move comes as the University continues to make large strides towards a return to the pre-pandemic college experience, most notably decreasing COVID-19 testing frequency to bi-weekly and ending mask mandates in classrooms. The University believes that the prevalence of ID misuse will also go down as maskless students will be easier to identify and catch.
