Clemson University Athletics has confirmed that Trevor Lawrence has tested positive for COVID-19 and is currently in isolation. Head Coach Dabo Swinney provided an update Thursday evening:
“Trevor has authorized us this evening to announce that he has tested positive for COVID-19 and is now in isolation. He is doing well with mild symptoms but will not be available for this week’s game against Boston College. While we certainly will miss Trevor, this is an opportunity for other guys to step up and we’re excited about competing against a very good BC team on Saturday. Go Tigers.”
Trevor Lawrence reiterated a similar message in a a statement to his Twitter on Thursday evening:
“I have tested positive for COVID-19, and my symptoms have been relatively mild while I’m following the protocol from Clemson and the ACC. The only thing that hurts is missing an opportunity to be with my teammates this weekend and play the game I love. I hate that I can’t be there, but I’ll be watching from isolation and pulling for our guys while I wait for the opportunity [to] rejoin the team. God bless and Go Tigers!”
The Tiger’s Sports Senior Reporter Jere Drummond speculates on what will happen with Saturday’s game against Boston College: “Who will start Saturday? It is possible that DJ Uiagalelei will make his first career start against a pretty good Boston College (4-2) team. It is also safe to say that Travis Etienne will be a busy man.” Sports Editor, Megan Kinner, noted that Clemson will be conducting at least one more round of testing before the game, so it is possible that more players and even some coaches will test positive.
This comes after the United States has set a record on Thursday for new daily cases, with more than 86,000 cases in a day according to The New York Times. South Carolina reported 918 confirmed positive cases on October 28, 2020 as well, with a total of 174,591 cases to date according to DHEC. Clemson University, with its rigorous testing strategy, continues to lead the country as well in cumulative positive COVID-19 cases as well.
