When searching for the best wings in Clemson, look no further than Backstreets Pub & Grill. Since 1992, Backstreets has served delicious drinks and food to the Clemson community and continues to be a notable stop for Clemson locals and visitors alike.

Backstreets boasts over three decades of history in the Clemson community, cementing itself as an iconic part of the downtown bar scene. The pub is split into two levels, with outdoor and indoor seating available on both floors. With many TV screens and knickknacks from the business’s history decorating the walls, the pub makes a perfect place to watch a game or hang out with friends.

Though Backstreets does serve incredible drinks, including iconic pitchers, its food menu is not to be overlooked. The pub has a simple yet comprehensive menu with front and back options ranging from burgers to salads. The menu’s simplicity allows the kitchen to make quality food that satisfies customers quickly.

A standout product from Backstreets is the wings, which is the first item listed on the front side of the menu. Backstreets’ wings are classic yet innovative, with many options to satisfy even the pickiest eaters. Customers can purchase either half a dozen or a dozen wings and can choose between sauce or dry rub options.

The menu lists 14 sauces that customers can choose from, ranging from mild to hot. Over half of the sauces are made in-house, making Backstreets’ wings unique to their business.

The pub recently reworked its hot sauce recipe to make it spicier, reflecting its commitment to innovation. Currently, the most popular sauce is the Peach Pimp, according to Josh Palmer, one of Backstreets’ long-standing cooks.

Palmer emphasized the homemade nature of their food, which makes Backstreets’ wings unique. The wings are cooked at 400 degrees at the time of order and are always fresh off the stove.

“We don’t precook our wings; it’s just straight up raw to crispy,” Palmer said.

Backstreet’s wings are especially popular on Wednesdays when the establishment offers a dozen wings for $8.99 as part of its “Wing Wednesday” promotion. On a typical Wednesday at Backstreets, the kitchen will go through six cases of wings, adding up to around 1,200 individual wings. This tradition brings many visitors to the pub, where students and locals can enjoy the food while unwinding after a long day of work or classes.

Backstreets is conveniently located in the middle of downtown Clemson, off Earle Street. If you are looking for the best wings in Clemson, head downtown and keep an eye out for the pub and grille’s bold purple signage that welcomes all visitors and locals to try its food and drinks.

I went to Backstreets Pub and grill on 3-24-24 on a recommendation from my daughter. We have baseball season tickets and we’re in town for the FSU sweep. We arrive at 10:45 and the door was locked. A girl that worked there opened the door and said “we don’t open till 10:00” and slammed the door in our faces before we could say a word. You never get a second chance at a first impression. I won’t be going back there ever again.
