In memory of individuals who died in the Sept. 11 attack 23 years ago, the Young Americans for Freedom chapter at Clemson organized a display of American flags on Clemson’s North Green.
The organization placed 2,977 small American flags on the Green to remember each person killed by 19 individuals from the group Al-Qaida on Sept. 11, 2001. This includes the people on the four hijacked commercial airplanes at both the World Trade Center Twin Towers and the Pentagon.
“By displaying these flags in such a prominent spot on campus, I hope students, faculty, staff, and community members take a moment today to remember the sacrifice of the 2,977 Americans,” Kathrine Bedard, president of Clemson YAF, told The Tiger in an email.
“Our country was forever changed on this day, and today serves as a reminder of the need to defend freedom.”
The display stems from the nationwide 9/11: Never Forget Project run by the Young America Foundation to “honor those murdered on September 11, 2001,” according to the YAF website.
This initiative aims to “properly remember” the fallen through American flag displays on college campuses across the United States. Clemson University is one of over 75 schools participating.
This is the second year the group has set up the memorial, as the YAF chapter was established at Clemson just last fall.
“In the days following 9/11, Americans rallied together with a spirit of national unity and respect for the flag. We hope students remember that many have given their lives so we can enjoy liberty and freedom,” Bedard told The Tiger.
“While we can never repay the heroic first responders that ran right into the chaos, the innocent individuals who went to work as usual, or the passengers of Flight 93 that decided to fight back against the hijackers, we can honor their legacy by remembering their stories.”
The flag display will remain on North Green until Sept. 12.
