The Clemson Tigers lost to the No. 3 Duke Blue Devils by a final score of 3-1 on Thursday. The Tigers dropped to 4-3-2 (0-2 ACC), while the Blue Devils improved to 6-0-1 (1-0 ACC).
The Blue Devils were off to a hot start, with multiple corner kicks and shots in the first few minutes of the match. In the first 10 minutes of the game, Duke acquired four shots on goal and six shots total, though the Tigers’ goalkeeper Nona Reason managed to keep the score at zero.
At the 17-minute mark of the game, the Blue Devils got on the board when forward Ella Hase put the ball in the top right corner of the net, just out of reach of the Clemson keeper. Maggie Graham and Devin Lynch assisted in the shot.
Clemson survived Duke’s hot start with just a one-goal deficit. The Tigers evened the game on their first shot on goal, when forward Jenna Tobia broke away and fired the ball into the top right corner of the net, past the fingertips of Duke’s diving goalie.
Though the score was even at the half, Duke led the Tigers in nearly every other category. The Blue Devils had six shots on goal to Clemson’s one, and four corner kicks to the Tigers’ zero.
Duke also started the second half hot, burying a shot in the net to take a 2-1 advantage six minutes into the period. Devin Lynch, who assisted the first Blue Devil goal of the game, delivered the second goal.
Duke added to the damage later in the half when Maggie Graham beat the keeper to the ball, ultimately delivering what would prove to be the finishing blow.
The Tigers will be back in action next Thursday when they take on the Florida State Seminoles in Tallahassee, Florida, at 7 p.m.
