Clemson women’s tennis split the weekend against Oklahoma State and SMU in the ITA season kickoff in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
The Tigers saw a tough matchup against No. 4 in the nation, Oklahoma State, on Saturday. Clemson’s highest-ranked doubles team, No. 75-ranked Romana Cisovska and Candela Yecora, supported their ranking with a 6-4 win. However, they were the only doubles team to have any success, with Oklahoma State managing crucial victories on courts No. 1 (6-3) and No. 3 (6-4).
The struggles continued for the Tigers on the singles side, as they failed to secure any singles
points. Cisovska and graduate student Sophia Hatton fought hard but ultimately fell, both in straight sets.
Three other singles matches failed to finish before the Cowboys secured the victory. The loss against Oklahoma State was the Tigers’ first loss of the season.
Sunday’s match against SMU was an opportunity to bounce back, and the Tigers rose to the challenge, winning 4-1.
On the doubles side, Cisovska and Yecora continued their success in a hard-fought tiebreak victory (7-6). Graduate duo Annabelle Davis and Hatton collected the doubles point with a 6-3 win.
Davis’s success continued on the singles side, where she completed an electrifying three-set comeback against SMU’s Arianna Stavropoulos, winning 4-6, 7-6, 6-1. Freshman stars Artemis Aslanisvili (6-2, 6-0) and Amelie Smejkalova (6-2, 6-3) both cruised to straight-set wins, securing the win for the Tigers.
Hatton and Cisovska’s respective singles matches were left unfinished.
The women’s tennis team looks to bring this momentum to Charlotte, North Carolina, as the Tigers take on the Charlotte 49ers on Feb. 7. Look out for the next chance to support the women at Duckworth Family Tennis Facility on Feb. 11 against the South Carolina Gamecocks.
