Lines form down the street, waiting outside the big red truck to donate blood. It’s a ritual as ingrained into rivalry week as the game itself: the Blood Bowl. But as popular as this event is, have you ever wondered who sets it up?
The answer to that question is no other than the Gamma Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, a national co-ed service fraternity that has yet again been voted as Clemson’s Best Service Organization by the community.
Alpha Phi Omega, which currently has 77 active members, is founded on three cardinal principles: Leadership, Friendship and Service.
Although its most well-known event is the Blood Bowl, which the chapter boasts is the largest collegiate blood drive in the nation, the chapter also helps out in a variety of other ways in the community.
These include cleaning up the community, volunteering at the local homeless shelter, helping out the local food bank and holding a scouting event in which boy scouts and girl scouts can earn Merit Badges. These events are impressive and helpful in their own right, but that is not what makes APO organization special.
“What makes us so special is our brothers. Every member of our organization is wholeheartedly and selflessly committed to providing service,” wrote APO President Kenna Quattro.“Every single person is so welcoming and open-minded, which is something you can’t find in every organization.”
The organization remains motivated to help improve the community and the world around them by fostering an inclusive environment.
