On a tough weekend trip to Florida, Clemson men’s tennis fell to No. 37-ranked Florida State on Friday and No. 34 Miami on Sunday.
Brandon Wagner’s squad dropped to 17-3 (6-2 ACC) as the team suffered its first two ACC losses of the season.
The Tigers failed to secure the doubles point in both weekend matches. Romain Gales and Wissam Abderrahman won their doubles match against FSU, but doubles courts No. 1 and 2 could not capitalize against a formidable FSU unit. Maxwell Smith and Noa Vukadin were nudged out by FSU’s No. 6-ranked pairing of Alex Bulte and Youcef Rihane. Against Miami, Smith and Vukadin went back to winning ways, winning 6-1 in doubles, but Miami seized the other two doubles matches, winning by a break in each.
In singles play, Abderrahman fell to FSU’s No. 14-ranked Corey Craig. Meanwhile, Marko Mesarovic and Gales each battled to a third set before the Seminoles overpowered them. The bright spot of Friday’s matchup was Vukadin’s singles win — a straight-set victory over FSU’s No. 40-ranked Jamie Connel.
Against Miami, Smith and Gales’ straight-set singles wins instilled hope in the Tigers as they swiped two points back after dropping the doubles point. Ultimately, it proved just to be a consolation. On court No. 1, Vukadin fell to No. 41-ranked Martin Katz after winning the first set. From there, losses from Mesarovic and Abderrahman proved fatal as the Hurricanes found their fourth point.
The Tigers’ frustrating weekend saw them snap a nine-match winning streak. However, any disappointments will be short-lived, considering the impressive season the team has already put together.
All eyes are on the road ahead as the Tigers prepare for a high-stakes matchup with No. 1 Wake Forest on Friday and No. 5 NC State on Sunday. Both games will be played at the Duckworth Family Tennis Facility.
