The Clemson Tigers defeated the New Hampshire Wildcats to begin their season 1-0 in an impressive fashion. In the 88-38 victory, Clemson spread out its offensive production heavily throughout the game, with 10 players tallying at least 15 minutes on the floor.
The 50-point win marked head coach Brad Brownell’s largest margin of victory in a season opener.
The Tigers scored 43 points in the first half. Though they accomplished this feat with nine players, none scored in double-digit values. Brownell was quick to utilize his bench throughout the early stages of the matchup, as he pulled all five starters at once within the first five minutes of the contest.
This trend continued into the second half, with six players finishing between 7 and 11 points. Every player who touched the floor scored except freshman Chase Thompson.
12 players took to the hardwood for Clemson, something different than a typical Brownell squad.
“I think you see that a lot of guys can contribute,” Brownell said. “I thought our starters did some really good things establishing the tone and the way we were gonna play.”
Redshirt freshman Ace Buckner led the team in scoring, tallying 18 points throughout the matchup in his 20 minutes on the court.
The Tigers opened up the game in the last 8:30 of the first half, going on a 21-5 run to extend their lead to 27 at the time, and never looked back.
Clemson struggled early from the free-throw line, shooting just 64% in the first half, 16-for-25. However, they fixed their struggles in the second half, going 14-for-16.
The Tigers’ defense shone throughout the matchup, holding New Hampshire to just one successful 3-point shot in the first half on 18 attempts. Over the course of the entire game, New Hampshire shot just 4-for-27 from deep.
Clemson will return to action on Friday, when it takes on Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m. in Littlejohn Coliseum.
