On Thursday, Yik Yak announced a new seasonal feature: Yak Match.
The campus-based social media application recently conducted a survey that found 1 in every 3 Gen Z respondents admitted to checking their phones during sex, and the new feature is designed to operate as a “matchmaking feature.”
Expected to arrive this month, students will answer compatibility questions and match with their top romantic match in Week 1. Week 2 is a friendship match, and Week 3 will result in an anonymous group chat of “compatible bffs” by the end of February.
According to Yik Yak’s press release, students will be paired with “exactly” one match, with absolutely no overlaps or doubles.
7 days after answering the initial compatibility questions for Week 1, they will receive a direct message with their match’s name.
“Will it be your lab partner? That person from your philosophy class? Your roommate’s ex? The algorithm knows, and you’re about to find out,” per the press release.
“We are all about community building, and with Cupid’s busy schedule, we’re happy to give him a hand,” Yik Yak CEO Kyle Venn said.
“Whether it’s romantic or platonic, we want to bring people together.”
Earlier in February, Yik Yak conducted a survey involving 100,000 students. 72% of respondents reported meeting their latest partner in person, but 35% confessed to scrolling on social media or texting during sex.
24 students said they had even “texted mom back mid-deed.”
Yik Yak remains the leading anonymous social media platform for college students in the United States, serving 2.23 million quarterly users, or 15% of all U.S. undergraduates.
Requiring .edu verification and fostering a bot-free environment, the platform intends to provide students with a safe and anonymous space for “authentic conversations.”
The Yak Match seasonal feature will be available before Valentine’s Day.
